— Johnny Cupcakes (@JohnnyCupcakes) January 22, 2012
I saw Johnny speak at NYU once, not long after I heard of this “Johnny Cupcakes” thing. I was curious. I had yet to buy any of his goods, but I had to see what he was about.
He just...
What's the most entertaining thing you can build?
In response to ycombinator’s “Kill Hollywood” appeal, I propose:
We’re funnier / smarter / more creative than you think, so let’s get off our collective asses and start making shit. I bet everyone of us has, at one point, been involved in some sort of funny “oh my good, that should have been a SNL skit” moment. Or a seriously intense debate with someone...

I went mountain biking today. My friend lent me a 29” single speed. We rode to the trail head, which was quite hilly, but thankfully my legs are still golden. We rode a few miles of single track. The bike seemed sluggish at times, I think because of the larger wheels. For sure they fell different than 26” wheels that I rode for years.
I’m quite glad to have gotten back on a...

During my travels I’ve met a lot of smart people. Most of these smart people were doing things that weren’t web related, but they were doing awesome stuff nonetheless. Writers. Musicians. Artists.
Usually our conversations included them saying, “I need a website.” They don’t want to blog (they’re busy doing stuff), but they want a website. Someplace to tell...

I keep looking at job listings, but no one is hiring for someone to travel 100% of the time, meet amazing people, and build a media outlet from the ground up. I mean, I did that with Buzzgrinder a decade ago. I started Noisecreep with some great people back in 2008. But no one is activley hiring someone to take a chance on something completely unproven and see if it works out. Sure, I could start...

Video #2 from my Skull Toaster project.
Tonight, in the car I borrowed from my parents, I Tweeted this:
Stories of hope and loss, jerks and saints this Christmas day. It’s been uplifting and sad all at the same time, but we’ll make it.
In recent years, when coming back to my hometown, I’ve been visiting an old friend from my high school years at her moms home. Her parents are divorced, so it’s her mom and her...

the Outage: escape, for good →
theoutage:
But what if the adventure impulse—that makes us climb mountains and paddle rapids—lasted longer than a three-day weekend? What if escapism took root? What if “getting out” became more than a hobby? What if it were a way of life?
I’ve seen too many marriages implode. Heard too many stories of out of work friends and their dried up savings accounts. Both of these these areas - relationships and work - are near and dear to me, having suffered (and still suffering) through both.
It might not seem it, but each is building up a new version of ourselves. It’s doubtful you would have recognized me in late 2008. I was...

I’ve been talking to a lot of good people recently about the whole “working” thing. Unhappy people. Mad people. Fed up people. The exchange of hours for dollars.
Many smart friends of mine are bored and unchallenged at work. Even if there is a ladder to climb, moving up looks miserable.
So people are saving up money and quitting. They’re looking for employment elsewhere....

Money being saved. Plans being put into order. I’m leaving New York City again on January 1, 2012 and will be travelling once again. This time I hope to make it to the Pacific Northwest, and document my adventures in much bigger ways then before.
I’m travelling light, with basically my laptop, a digital camera and some clothes. I’ll be crashing with friends and eating lots of...
